Save Your Skin, Save The Reefs In Puerto Vallarta

Spend time in Puerto Vallarta, and you’re almost certainly going to spend time playing outdoors in the sun. In fact, many of the area’s star attractions happen in the fresh air and in the full light of day. You took the time to find the perfect Puerto Vallarta villa rental. You chaired the evening sessions to decide how to spend tomorrow. Take just a few minutes more before you step out and apply sunblock – liberally. Biodegradable – Really? There is simply no way you can spend all day romping in the waves and not pick up a few too many rays. Sunburn can be a serious bummer – uncomfortable and not so good for your skin; a bad one might force you to stay in the cool shelter of your Puerto Vallarta villa rental for a day or two (tough duty). Here’s the rub: while you are splish-splashing in Banderas Bay, your sunblock is gradually transferring itself from you to the bay. That’s not so good for the bay. In fact, in many seaside vacation spots, Mexico now requires swimmers, divers and other various and sundry water worshipers to use biodegradable sunblock to minimize the damage to the marine world. Puerto Vallarta has not put this restriction in place – yet. Still, if you can do some small thing to help the environment, why not? Here are a few biodegradable sunblock choices that you can purchase online (some are available in local shops) You can find Mexitan sunscreen lotion (SPF 30) locally. It uses a “secret recipe” to provide protection from the sun. The label says it is safe for children and pets and it is water-resistant. Kiss My Face makes a moisturizer that is also SPF 15; the ingredients include a long list of organic oils and plant extracts. This one comes with a cautionary note: it is not waterproof, and because the SPF is low, you’ll need to reapply frequently (don’t forget your ears and the back of your neck). Desert Essence makes a sunblock (SPF 30) that also makes claims to “Age Reversal.” It is cruelty-free and organic. Again, this one is primarily for the face and doesn’t profess to be waterproof. Still, age reversal . . . Whether you choose to spend a day soaring through the jungle on a zip line, swimming with dolphins, or lazing on the beach with a bucket of beverages on ice, it’s worth your while to slip into a good coat of biodegradable sunblock.
